This year, I had the distinct honor of serving as a jury member for the World Robot Olympiad (WRO) 2024, held in the vibrant city of Dortmund. As I reflect on this incredible experience, I am filled with admiration for the bright young minds and the innovative projects that highlighted the event. The WRO is not just a competition; it is a celebration of creativity, teamwork, and the boundless possibilities of technology.
The World Robot Olympiad: A Hub of Innovation
The World Robot Olympiad is a global event that brings together students from around the world to showcase their skills in robotics and programming. Participants range from elementary school students to university-level young adults, all eager to push the boundaries of what robots can do. This year, Dortmund played host to this prestigious event, and it was a fitting location, given the city’s rich industrial history and commitment to technological advancement.

My Role as a Jury Member in RoboMission: Senior
I was privileged to be part of the jury in the RoboMission: Senior category. This category, designed for high school students, challenges teams to build and program robots that can autonomously complete specific tasks. The complexity and creativity involved in these projects were truly awe-inspiring. As a jury member, I had the opportunity to see firsthand the innovative solutions these young engineers developed to solve real-world problems.
Witnessing the Future in Action
One of the most striking aspects of the WRO 2024 was the diversity of the projects. Teams tackled a wide range of challenges, from environmental sustainability to urban planning and healthcare. I was particularly impressed by a project that addressed waste management using autonomous robots. The team had designed a robot capable of sorting and processing recyclable materials, demonstrating not only technical proficiency but also a keen awareness of environmental issues.
Another standout project involved a robot designed to assist in disaster relief operations. This robot could navigate through rubble and deliver essential supplies to those trapped in disaster-stricken areas. The level of detail and thought that went into this project was remarkable, and it was heartening to see young minds focused on using technology for humanitarian purposes.
The Spirit of Collaboration and Learning
Beyond the technical achievements, what truly made the WRO 2024 special was the spirit of collaboration and learning that permeated the event. Teams worked together seamlessly, combining their diverse skills and perspectives to overcome challenges. The enthusiasm and passion they displayed were infectious, and it was clear that they were not just competing for prizes but were genuinely excited about the process of discovery and innovation.
As a jury member, I also had the opportunity to engage with the participants, offering feedback and discussing their projects in detail. These interactions were incredibly rewarding, as I witnessed the students’ eagerness to learn and their openness to constructive criticism. It was evident that the WRO is as much about personal and professional growth as it is about competition.

A Bright Future Ahead
The World Robot Olympiad 2024 in Dortmund was a testament to the incredible potential of young people in the field of robotics. The creativity, technical skill, and problem-solving abilities demonstrated by the participants were nothing short of extraordinary. As I left Dortmund, I felt a renewed sense of optimism for the future. These young innovators are not only the leaders of tomorrow but are also poised to make significant contributions to society today.
Being part of the WRO as a jury member was a truly enriching experience. I am grateful for the opportunity to witness such brilliance and to play a small role in encouraging the next generation of engineers and innovators. The future of robotics is in good hands, and I eagerly look forward to seeing what these talented young minds will achieve in the years to come.
